My cutting table's registration camera can't find or misreads the print marks

The flatbed cutter's optical camera fails to locate the printed register marks, reports 'mark not found,' or reads them in the wrong place — so the cut ends up offset from the printed graphic even though the cut file is correct. Most often caused by marks printed too light or sitting on a busy/dark background, giving the camera too little contrast, among other possible causes — a full step-by-step diagnostic and fix follows below.
