Heavy solids look mottled with tiny white pinholes (snowflaking / poor ink transfer)

Large solid ink areas print with a scattering of tiny unprinted white specks or a snowflake/orange-peel texture, and solids look weak or uneven instead of dense and smooth. Most often caused by ink drying too fast at the printing nip so it will not level or coalesce on the substrate (the most common cause), among other possible causes — a full step-by-step diagnostic and fix follows below.
