India Moves Forward with Polymer Banknote Trials for ₹10 and ₹20 Denominations

The Reserve Bank of India and the Union government have approved field trials of one billion each of ₹10 and ₹20 polymer banknotes, with a target circulation date at the start of FY28 if testing succeeds. The RBI has begun tendering for polymer substrate procurement and will evaluate the notes across India's varied climates and high-volume cash infrastructure. Polymer notes, made from BOPP, typically last three to four times longer than cotton-pulp paper notes and offer enhanced security features, potentially reducing the significant cost of replacing worn currency. A previous 2012 pilot was abandoned due to compatibility issues with ATMs and counting machines, challenges the new trials aim to address.
