IIT Madras Uses 3D Printing to Reimagine Musical Instrument Production

Researchers at IIT Madras are using additive manufacturing and computer-aided design to produce playable plastic prototypes of violins, ukuleles, and Indian string instruments. Led by Professor Ramanathan Muthuganapathy, the project explores how variables such as wall thickness, geometry, and internal structure influence acoustic performance. While the prototypes demonstrate the flexibility of digital fabrication — allowing rapid design changes without new moulds — questions around tonal quality, durability, and musician acceptance remain unanswered, with no commercial launch or pricing confirmed.
