Indian Newspaper Industry Still Below Pre-Pandemic Revenue Peak, Trust in News Hits Decade Low
Shared with SuperPrinters · 8/29/2026 · Source: indianprinterpublisher.com
A 9-year IppStar review of 47 Indian newspaper groups shows the industry has not yet recovered to its FY 2018-19 revenue peak, even as it rebounds from pandemic-era lows. Compounding the challenge, global trust in news media has dropped to 37% — its lowest level since Reuters Institute began tracking the metric in 2015 — as younger audiences increasingly turn to digital creators, video platforms, and AI-driven content. Industry leaders suggest print retains some life in India for now, but urge publishers to invest newsprint savings into productivity and brand credibility rather than treating lower costs as a windfall.
