INS Advises 15% Ad Surcharge to Offset Soaring Newsprint Costs

The Indian Newspaper Society has recommended that member publications apply a uniform 15% surcharge on advertisements starting August 1, 2026, citing sharp increases in domestic and imported newsprint prices along with other rising input costs. The decision, made at INS's 665th executive committee meeting in Mumbai, asks publishers to formally notify advertising agencies in advance to avoid billing disputes. The move comes amid an absence of updated readership data, as the last Indian Readership Survey dates back to 2019, complicating ad rate negotiations for media planners.
