The All India Notebook Manufacturers Association has warned of an existential crisis facing India's MSME-dominated notebook industry, driven by duty-free imports from ASEAN nations and an inverted GST structure that disadvantages local producers. While the GST Council eliminated tax on notebooks to help students, domestic paper mills responded by raising base prices 12-14% to recover lost input tax credits, wiping out any benefit. The association is calling on the government to introduce minimum import prices, launch anti-dumping investigations against Indonesian suppliers, and reform export refund rules to protect jobs and the domestic manufacturing base.
